JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Following a matchup to nationally-ranked foe Nova Southeastern last weekend, the Carson-Newman swim program will be put to the test for the second time in a week when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to take on the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 3:00 p.m. from the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
The Greyhounds are ranked No. 2 on the men's side with the women rounding out the top-five in the CollegeSwimming.com Division II polls. In the CSCAA/TYR polls released on Wednesday, Jan, 9, Indy's men are the top team in the all of Division II with the women checking in at No. 4.
"We're excited because they're such a big team but it goes two ways," senior swimmer Lisa Postma said. "It's also tough. We need to get together and get the wins one race at a time and see how far we can go. I'm excited to see what the guy's side can do this weekend. I think they're really going to be good this year so I'm looking forward to that as well."
Saturday's dual meet will mark the first time in C-N's history that they will face off against the nation's best unit during in-season contests. The Eagles have faced a ranked opponent in four out of the five meets they have competed in during the 2018-19 campaign.
Coach Jordan Taylor's men were slotted at the No. 14 position in the CSCAA poll with the women climbing back into the ranks at No. 20. In the CollegeSwimming.com poll, the C-N men sit at their highest ranking ever at No. 7 followed by the women at No. 14.
The aforementioned dual meet against the NSU Sharks on Jan. 5 saw the Eagles fall on both sides. The Sharks women's group collected 186.5 points to top C-N who held just 56.5. NSU grabbed a total 164 in the men's events to the Eagles 79. NSU's women's program ranks at No. 10 in the country with the men inside the top-20 at No. 18.
"After a not so good race at Nova and not what we wanted it was good to still see us in the national rankings," Postma said. "Last year we lost some good swimmers so it's good to see we can combat that this season. We've really come together as a team and worked hard over break so I was very excited to see. Our bodies are feeling it but we hope that the day of rest will help and our mindset is ready for these big meets."
Receiving perks of being one of the top teams in the country, the Hounds return from a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii in a meet against No. 3 Drury and No. 5 Lindenwood (Men) with No. 2 Drury and No. 15 Lindenwood (Women) on Jan. 8.
