JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - With its final home meet of the year slated for Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1:00 p.m from the MSAC Pool, the Carson-Newman swim program will honor its seniors when the Emmanuel Lions visit Mossy Creek.
A total of 17 seniors will receive recognition with nine coming from the men's team and eight from the women which is the largest graduating class under coach Jordan Taylor at C-N. It is expected for the group to be announced at approximately 15 minutes prior to the start of the meet.
"The senior class mean a lot to me," Taylor said. "They are part of the best recruiting class we have ever had. It shows with our national rankings this year that we are continuing to build and it's been led by those seniors. They've done a lot for this program in the classroom as well and it will be hard to watch them leave in a few months. Really proud of everything they've accomplished so far here but also looking forward to what can come in the next few weeks."
C-N's last outing game on Jan. 5 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla, when they took on Nova Southeastern in a dual meet.
The No. 10 ranked women Sharks topped the No. 14 Eagles women after they collected 186.5 points to C-N's 56.5. No. 18 NSU's men grabbed a win of 164-79.
Taylor's troops were slated to face the top men's team in the country and the fourth-ranked women's team in Division II last weekend at the University of Indianapolis, however, Taylor elected to pull his teams out of the meet due to inclement weather in the area and safety of travel.
The Lions men rank No. 34 in the country under coach Allen Gilchrest. His women's side currently sits outside of the top-50 schools in the nation. At the D2 level, a total of 67 universities have men's swim teams with an additional 84 programs for the women.
Emmanuel is a member of the Conference Carolinas who have not raced since Dec. 11 when members were in Hangzhou, China for the FINA World Swimming Championships. Prior to that, Gilchrest's squad swam in the SCAD Invitational from Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
"We have fined tuned some details since getting back to campus," Taylor said. "We are putting our efforts into getting ready for conference in a few weeks. The team doesn't like to get beat especially at home and I think they're ready for this. Emmanuel has potentially some guys that could be at nationals this year and they've continued to build so they will put us to a good test on senior night."
