Friday Preliminary Heat Sheets
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After grabbing five All-Bluegrass Mountain Conference performances in day one of the Championships, Carson-Newman swimming nearly doubled that number in the day two finals from the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center with a total of nine All-league swims.
In her first individual event final at the BMC's, freshman Meredith Ginn grabbed an All-league honor in the 200-yard individual medley with a fifth-place finish with a time of 2:03.46. The Ocala, Fla. native was the lone first-year swimmer to earn a top-eight time.
After grabbing the top time in the 200 IM in the morning swims, Caleb Howell turned in a third-place finish and an All-BMC swim at 1:48.54 to grab 16 points. Jon Lancaster collected 11 in the same event and rounded out the top-eight with an All-Conference swim of his own at 1:51.30.
Matthew George and Marcelo Figueiredo nearly turned in All-BMC swims in the 500-yard freestyle events with seventh and eighth-place finishes at 4:30.82 and 4:34.46 respectively, both of which were lower than the preliminary swim times.
All three Eagles who were slated to compete in the women's 50-yard freestyle earned All-BMC honors on Thursday night as Lisa Postma, Elly Culp, and Mary Northcutt combined for 36 points with sixth, seventh, and eighth-place finishes respectively. Postma tied her prelim swim time of 23.56 seconds with Culp coming in at 23.60 and Northcutt at 23.95.
Senior Jonny Goss placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle for the men to earn 14 points with a mark at 20.59 seconds, .06 faster than his swim this morning.
Coach Jordan Taylor's women's relay team in the 400-yard medley of Ruth Hullette, Ginn, Culp, and Postma grabbed the No. 3 spot behind Wingate and Queens with a new season-low time of 3:49.70, almost six seconds under than their previous best.
It was a mirror image finish in the men's event with the Royals and Bulldogs taking the top-two spots followed by the Eagles time of 3:16.97 from Andrei Ungur, Roman Andrei, Ivo Kunzle, and Chad Andoljsek. The mark is almost two seconds lower than their previous season-best time which currently is the 13th lowest time in all of Division II and a new school record.
"Another solid day for us getting a lot of people all-conference awards," Taylor said. "We moved up on some record boards and broke some records for the program which was good. There's a lot of good stuff to talk about for us after today but it was just another solid day at the office. We just want to keep working hard fighting for every position tomorrow morning to get us in finals and get points and just try to keep the team engaged as we move forward into the final two days."
Both C-N men's and women's teams hold third-place in the team standings with the men grabbing 202 points to the women's 186.
Queens and Wingate hold the top spots for each gender as the Royals post 409.50 on the men and 360 for the women to the Bulldogs 256.60 and 300.
