Roberts, Guerreiro net Chick-Fil-A Athlete of the Week honors

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman baseball's Brandon Roberts (Davie, Fla.) and women's tennis' Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) have been named the Chick-Fil-A Male and Female Athletes of the Week.

Roberts recorded at least one hit in each of the four games over the weekend against Northwood (Mich.) leading the Eagles to a 3-1 record. Overall, the Davie, Fla. native went 7-for-14 at the plate with two home runs, a triple and seven runs batted in.

The third basemen exploded for a massive day on Saturday going 4-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader with a home run in each game. The senior became the first C-N player since Cody Fox on March 1, 2014 against Lincoln Memorial to hit a home run in each game of a doubleheader.

In the first game, the four-year starter went 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs, a triple and two runs scored. Roberts has now hit safely in each of the first 10 games of the 2016 season and is hitting .410 with three homers and 10 RBIs.

Patricia Guerreiro went 2-0 in singles play over the week as Carson-Newman's No. 2 player and 1-1 while teamed up with Alli Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) as the squad's top doubles tandem.

Guerreiro downed a Bulldog from Tennessee Wesleyan in two sets on Feb. 18 6-1 and 6-0 and picked up right where she left off on Sunday by winning in three sets at Newberry 6-7, 6-1 and 6-1. In the senior's double victory against the Bulldogs, Guerreiro and Harris swept their competition with an 8-0 route.

The Portugal native's play over the past week increased her career win total in singles to 28 victories.
