C-N picks up first SAC win with sweep over Tornadoes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team picks up its first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season with a 9-0 sweep over Brevard Tuesday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.

"Good first conference win for the women today," coach Jean Love said. "We have been close in the previous two conference matches so it was really nice to finally come out with a 'W'."

In two prior conference matchups, the Eagles (5-2, 1-2) came up short against Newberry 5-4 (Feb. 21) and Coker 6-3 (March 11) to record an 0-2 SAC record heading into Tuesday's contest.

Carson-Newman quickly ended the winless drought against conference opponents with an undefeated showing against the Tornadoes (0-10, 0-6).

Tuesday's match began right on cue for a C-N club that took all three matches in doubles play. Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) linked up with senior Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) for the first time this season and combined efforts for the 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.

Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) then teamed up to take down Rachael Stanford and Sam Miranda 8-2 in the second-seeded match, 8-2. Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) and Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) then took down Brevard's No. 3 pairing 8-0 to head into singles play.

"Mallory and Haleigh started us off right with a quick win at 3 doubles.  Then Brooke and Ali came through at 2 doubles followed by Jill and Patricia at 1 doubles.  We were very solid in singles as well."

Harris kicked things off for the Eagles in the next round of play with the 6-1, 6-0 win in the first-seeded match over Nirvanna Silva. Guerreiro then followed with another two-set victory, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 and Corsato-Owsianka followed a court over with the 6-1 win in two sets in the third round of matches.

Sanderson competed in the No. 4 spot and contributed a 6-0 win in two sets for the Eagles and Gabrielle Wood (Woodstock, Ga.) battled a court over in the fifth-seeded contest for another 6-0, 6-0 win.

Jackson concluded the Carson-Newman's first SAC win of the season with a victory at No. 6 over Kristen Rathbun, 6-1, 6-0.

The Eagles will hit the courts again Wednesday afternoon for another conference contest to make up a rain-cancelled match that was previously scheduled for Sunday afternoon against Lenoir-Rhyne.
