Eagles hawk down Lions, win 6-3

MARS HILL, N.C.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon as the squad took down South Atlantic Conference foe Mars Hill 6-3 at the Mars Hill Tennis Complex.

The Eagles (11-4, 5-4) were able to get off on a good note by taking two of the three doubles contests from the Lions (4-12, 1-8) to begin the afternoon.

Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) powered passed Samantha Echevarria and Jade Henke 8-2 in the second-seeded contest. Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) and Gabrielle Wood (Woodstock, Ga.) followed suit with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

The two teams were able to pick up the slack following Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka's (Germany) 8-6 loss in the first match and carried the momentum on into singles play.

Harris would stumble in the first seeded contest and lose 2-6, 6-3 and 603 in three tough sets, but the eagles would rally behind their No. 1 double player by winning the next two matches.

Guerreiro defeated Jasha Geerdink 7-5, 2-6 and 6-2 at No. 2 while Corsato-Owsianka took down Jade Henke 6-1, 6-0 in the third-seeded contest.

Mars Hill would then respond by picking up a win in the fourth singles match from Lucy McLarin. The junior was able to take care of Sanderson 6-3, 7-6 in two sets to give the Lions their second point on the afternoon.

Carson-Newman would respond by claiming the final two matches in the round at No. 5 and 6 singles.

Wood came out victorious over Natalle Hilbig 6-0 in two sets while Jackson took care of Hannah Hill 6-0, 6-1 in the sixth and final match of the day.

It was a really nice start winning two of the doubles matches to begin the day," coach Jean Love said. "Then Gabrielle [Wood] won quickly at No. 5 singles, followed by Jill [Corsato] at No. 3 singles.  Then Patricia [Guerreiro] secured the team victory earning a win at No. 2 singles in three tough sets."

Carson-Newman will be back in action on April 6 when the team travels to Reinhardt for a 12:00 p.m. non-conference showdown.
