Eagles fall in conference opener to Trojans.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team opened up South Atlantic Conference play with a 7-2 loss to Anderson on Sunday afternoon.

"Tough day for the women," Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said. "We were able to win only one of the doubles matches and one of the singles matches. Our most experienced players and all conference selections, Ali (Harris) and Jill (Corsato-Owsianka), have struggled so far this season. We need them to play better."

Carson-Newman (1-3, 0-1) lost two out of three matches in doubles play. Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) defeated Anderson's (7-2, 1-0) No.2 doubles combination 8-3. Meanwhile, the No.1 doubles tandem of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) lost for the second time this season. While Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) and Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) lost for a third straight time to start out the year.

"Newcomers Klara (Vuckovic) and Alisa (Liashova) won decisively at No.2 doubles and Klara won at No.4 singles," Love said.

Harris (1-4) was unable to replicate her winning ways on the court from Friday's match against Tennessee Wesleyan as she lost in straight sets (6-1, 6-4) at the No.1 singles position. Corsato-Owsianka (2-3) did not fare much better at the No.2 singles position falling in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Liashova (2-3) won the first set easily at 6-1, but then lost a close second set tiebreaker 7-6, and lost the final set 6-1.

Tatum (1-3) lost at the No.5 singles position 6-3, 6-1. Vuckovic (1-3) entered the match on Sunday with a bit of momentum after a win on Friday afternoon. Vuckovic won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at the No.4 singles position. With the match already decided Ledington played only played one set at No.6 singles and lost 8-6.

The Eagles next match will be on the road against Tusculum at 1:00 p.m.
