Eagles earn first conference win of the season

HICKORY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team picked up its first South Atlantic Conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne 6-3.

"This was a much needed win for us today," Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said. "We swept doubles play. Sydney(Ledington) and Lindy (Tatum) got us off to a good start. Ali (Harris) and Jill (Corsato-Owsianka) played better today, while Klara (Vuckovic) and Alisa (Liashova) continue to be steady." 
 

For the first time this season Carson-Newman (2-4, 1-1) swept an opponent in doubles play. The Eagles No.1 doubles tandem of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne's (6-6, 1-3) tandem of Emily Murchland and Sophia Aguilar Di Camillo 8-4.

 

In the No.2 doubles pairing Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) defeated the duo of Iulia Ponomareva and Sara Kalkenova 8-6.

 

In the final doubles match of the afternoon Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) and Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) dominated the team of Jessica Rumple and Taylor Fredrickson 8-1, to complete the sweep in doubles play.  

 

The women's team carried the momentum earned into singles action as they split the matches with Bears at three a-piece. Harris won a tough match at No.1 singles to get things going for the Eagles. Harris won her first set 6-3, before falling in the second set 8-6. Harris took the final set 6-1 over Kalkenova and moved to 2-4 on the season.

"This was a good win for Ali, she played well," Love said.  

Liashova got back on track, winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) over Marta Escanero Funes. The freshman from the Ukraine is now 3-3 on the season at No.3 singles. Tatum rounded out the winning for the Eagles in the No. 5 singles match with a 6-4, 7-6 victory.

"Alisa was solid again in her straight set win." Love said, "Lindy was really on her game today. It was good to see her come through with a victory."  

Corsato-Owsianka (2-4) lost for at the No.2 singles position for the second straight week. The junior lost the first set 2-6, but battled back in the second set with a 7-6 victory and lost the last set 7-5. Vuckovic (2-4) sees her two match winning streak come to a close with 6-3, 6-2 loss at No.4 singles.

 

Ledington (1-5) lost a very competitive match in the No.6 singles slot. The junior dropped the first set 2-6, but won the second set 6-3, before she dropped the final set 10-6.

 

The Eagles next match will be on the road at Coker on March 11 at 1 p.m.
