Eagles Clobber Cobras

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team picked up their second consecutive South Atlantic Conference win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Coker 7-2.

"The doubles play set the tone for us." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "We won two of the three doubles matches and the momentum continued as we swept the first three singles matches."

 

Carson-Newman (3-4, 2-1) took the first four-matches of singles play in straight sets over Coker (2-4, 1-2). Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) easily won her No.1 singles match in straight sets over Jennifer Mezei 6-2, 6-2. Harris has now won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.

 

Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) defeated Jennifer Ruetten at No.2 singles 6-3, 6-1. At No.3 singles Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) picked up her team leading fourth victory of the season, with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Julia Sorrells.

 

Klara Vuckovic (Germany) picked up a 6-0, 6-4 straight sets victory at No.4 singles over Jenna Gainey. Vuckovic has won three-matches this season and all have come in straight set victories over opponents.

 

Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) won at No.6 singles 8-6 to break a two-match losing streak. Freshman Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) was the lone women's tennis player to not win in singles play on Saturday afternoon. Tatum lost the first set 6-3, but came back to force a third set after a 6-3 second set victory. Tatum lost the final set 10-7 and is 0-2 on the season in three-set matches.

 

In doubles play the tandem of Vuckovic and Liashova now have a four game win streak at No.2 doubles. Vuckovic and Liashova defeated Sarah Elliott and Suzanna Mickey 8-4. At No.1 doubles Harris and Corsato-Owsianka picked up their second consecutive victory to improve to 3-2 on the season. Ledington and Tatum lost in a tiebreak at No.3 doubles 9-8. 

 

"We are starting to play a little better," Love said. "This will help us as we go into a big week with three conference matches." 

 

Carson-Newman will take on in-state rival Lincoln Memorial on Monday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
