SALISBURY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis took little time in defeating the Catawba Indians 8-1, on Sunday afternoon.

"Nice win for the women today." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "Played decently in doubles to go ahead 3-0. Then tough singles matches at the top of the lineup, Jill (Corsato-Owsianka) came through first with a straight set win. Then Alisa (Liashova) followed with a three set victory to secure the match."

Carson-Newman (4-5, 3-2) dominated in doubles play to gain early 3-0 lead over the Catawba Indians (10-7, 2-5). The No.1 doubles tandem of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) won 8-3 against Sophie Hirsch and Olivia Wooldridge. Harris and Corsato-Owsianka improve to 4-3 on the season as partners.

At the No.2 doubles position Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) shook off the Friday loss to Wingate and won 8-2 against Catawba. The freshman tandem is now 5-2 overall on the year and the duo is 4-1 in South Atlantic Conference play.

The No. 3 doubles tandem of Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) and Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) broke a two match losing streak on Sunday afternoon, winning 8-5.

The first two matches in singles play each went three sets. Harris found herself up a set at No.1 singles after a 6-0 first set win. The sophomore then lost the final two sets 6-3, 6-4 to drop to 3-6 on the year in singles play. Liashova got her first start of the season at No.2 singles and did not disappoint winning the first 7-5. The freshman dropped the second set tiebreak 6-7, but pulled through in the third set with a 6-1 victory.

Corsato-Owsianka started at the No. 3 singles position on Sunday afternoon. Last season the junior went 15-2 at the No.3 singles position and Sunday was no different. Corsato-Owsianka won easily in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 against Wooldridge.

At the No. 4 singles spot Vuckovic was pushed to the limits with a three set match. In the first set Vuckovic came away with a 6-3 victory against Marina Geremias. Geremias dominated the second set winning 6-0 to force a third set with Vuckovic. In the final set Vuckovic held on for a 10-8 victory.

Tatum broke a two match losing streak on Sunday afternoon winning in straight sets at No. 5 singles. The freshman won the first set 6-2, and then shutout her opponent 6-0 in the second set to earn the victory. Leddington concluded the match with an 8-2 victory over Emily Corcoran.

The Eagles next match will be on the road against Tusculum on March 22 at 1 p.m.
