Pioneers too tough for Eagles

GREENVILLE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team lost 8-1 to rival Tusculum on Wednesday afternoon at the Roger M. Nichols Tennis Complex.

 

"We were outplayed today." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "Give credit to our opponents. We were competitive at times especially at No. 2 doubles and in a few of the singles matches."

 

Carson-Newman (4-6, 3-3) has now lost to Tusculum (11-3, 6-0) for seven consecutive years, dating back to the 2009-2010 season. The Pioneers have moved into first place in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Eagles fall into seventh place in the SAC standings.

 

In doubles play the Eagles attempted to stay even with the Pioneers winning the No. 2 doubles match. The pairing of Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) won their second consecutive doubles match by a score of 9-8. The duo are now 6-2 overall on the year and 5-1 in conference play.

 

The top pairing of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) fell 8-3 to Tusculum's Franziska Funke and Katarina Majorova. The duo of Harris and Corsato-Owsianka fell to a 4-4 overall record on the season. The No. 3 tandem of Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) and Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) lost 8-1, lowering their overall record to 2-6 on the year.

 

Singles play was not much better for the Eagles as the team lost every set for the second time in three matches. Harris lost in No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-1 to Majorova the conference player of the week. Harris is 3-7 overall on the year and is currently riding a three match losing streak.

 

In the No. 2 singles match Liashova lost in straight sets 6-0, 7-5 to Funke. Liashova is now 5-5 overall on the year and is 1-1 at the No. 2 singles position. Corsato-Owsianka lost a tightly contested match 7-6, 7-5. The junior is now 4-6 on the year with a 1-1 record at the No. 3 singles position.   

 

Vuckovic lost a close first set 7-5 but fell 6-2 in the second set. The freshman falls to 4-6 on the year and 3-3 in conference play. This is the fifth time this season that Vuckovic has lost in straight sets to an opponent.

 

Tatum was unable to continue her win streak as she lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. The freshman is now 3-7 on the year at No. 5 singles. Ledington rounded the match out with an 8-2 loss to drop to 3-7 on the season at No. 6 singles.

 

The Eagles will look to bounce back against Newberry on Sunday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and livestats will be provided at cneagles.com/live
