Eagles fall early to Patriots

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team saw a two-match winning streak come to an end on Thursday afternoon, with a 6-3 loss to the University of the Cumberlands.

 

"Today was ugly," Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said. "Our opponents played well today, but we played sloppy and had too many errors."

 

Carson-Newman (6-7, 5-3) got off to a rough start in doubles play to begin the day against Cumberlands (10-6). The only doubles team to pick up a point for the Eagles was the No. 2 doubles team composed of Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany). The duo won their fifth consecutive match with 8-6 win on Thursday. The pairing have compiled a 9-2 overall record on the season.

 

The No. 1 doubles combination of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) lost 8-2. The duo are now 5-6 on the season after the loss on Thursday. The final doubles pairing of Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) and Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) lost their fourth consecutive doubles match on Thursday afternoon, 8-1.

 

Only two Eagles were able to pick up victories in singles play. Corsato-Owsianka picked up her third win in a row at No. 3 singles, with 6-3, 6-4 win. The junior is now 7-6 on the season and has gone 4-1 since moving to No. 3 singles. Ledington picked up a win at No. 6 singles to give the Eagles their final victory of the day. The junior is 5-8 on the year at No. 6 singles.

 

The Eagles top two singles players Harris and Liashova both faltered on Thursday. Harris went down in straight-sets at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2. Harris is trying to shake out of her sophomore slump, the preseason all-conference selection has gone just 4-9 this season. Liashova lost her fourth straight match on Thursday 6-3, 6-3. The freshman has gone just 1-4 since moving into the No. 2 singles position.

 

A pair of freshman rounded out the match for the Eagles at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles positions. Vuckovic won the first set 6-4, but then lost the final two sets 7-5, 10-7. The native of Germany is 6-7 on the year with a 5-3 record in conference play. Tatum lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, to see her two match winning streak come to an end. The Tennessee native is now 6-9 on the season at No. 5 singles.

 

The Eagles will look to shake off the loss with a road trip to Brevard on Saturday, April 1. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
