Carson-Newman women’s tennis falls in contest against the Austin Peay Governors.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Going up against the undefeated Governors proved challenging for the Eagles as they fell 7-0 in their first match of the season.

"We just got overwhelmed in doubles," head tennis coach Jim Frederick said. "They were bigger and stronger, and we didn't fight back."

At the No. 1 doubles position, Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) teamed up against Austin Peay's Lidia Yanes Garcia and Claudia Yanes Garcia falling 6-2. At No. 2 the sophomore duo of Abby Reis (Des Moines, I.A.) and Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) fell to Tatiana Lopez and Honoka Nakanishi 6-1. Rounding out the doubles competition were Klara Vuckovic (Germany) and Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) against Helena Kuppig and Danielle Morris falling 6-1.

Moving into singles play, freshman Ana Carla Resende battled her way into a third set tie-breaker but could not close out the win as she fell to Lidia Garcia 6-7, 6-2, 10-3. At No. 2 singles, Harris went up against Claudia Garcia and fell 6-1, 6-2. Price followed at No. 3 for the Eagles going head to head against Lopez but came up short with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Liashova fell to Kuppig 6-2, 6-1 and Reis battled it out against Morris but fell 6-4, 6-3. Concluding the singles play for the Eagles was Vuckovic falling in similar fashion to Albertson 6-2, 6-3.

"We played well in singles," Frederick said of the Eagles' effort. "We lost a lot of 6-2, 6-4 sets. Ana Carla competed well but ended up losing in a third set tiebreaker."

The Eagles will be back in action against Virginia-Wise on February 10th at home at 12 p.m.
