JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's succession of victories extended Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse as the Eagles turned in their third straight win 25-18, 25-22 and 25-18 in a South Atlantic Conference meeting with Coker.
"They have worked really hard at it," Carson-Newman coach Dave Franklin said of his team's consistency. "Our outsides had a big weekend. Not just in kills but in understanding when to hit certain shots, when to go for it and when to control it. The controlled shots they hit put the other teams in trouble. It started with Anna Patton putting up great hittable balls for them. It started with the pass."
It is the second straight sweep for Carson-Newman (11-10, 6-7) marking the first time since a string a four from Oct. 10-20, 2015 that the Eagles won back-to-back matches in three sets.
Anna Patton (Franklin, Tenn.) led the way statistically with 30 assists, 11 digs, a career-high six service aces and three kills. It was her ninth double-double of the season.
On the pins, Marnie Streeter (Goldvein, Va.) put forth another large outing with 14 kills on a .324 hitting percentage. The team compiled a .239 hitting clip.
Libero Morgan Ballard (Weaverville, N.C.) paced all players in the match with 19 digs while Megan Oldenburger (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had 13 digs with five kills.
"What we have really been pushing is our side out percentage," Ballard stated. "It was a point that we need to make a good pass. So far the past two nights our side-out percentage has been amazing. All of our passers have been amazing. I think we are finally starting to find that chemistry."
The Eagles were behind by a pair at 6-4 when they reeled off six straight and 10 of the next 11 to take control at 14-7 in the opening game. Streeter had six kills on 10 swings in the opening set and put the finish touch on the stanza with a hammer to the center of the court.
Momentum carried into the second set for C-N as the Eagles won 10 of the first 11 points to start. Coker (10-13, 4-10) failed to crumble going on an 8-1 run to pull within two. C-N responded by stretching the lead to six points only to see the Cobras pull within two at 22-20. Franklin's team grinded out the set as Streeter once again sealed the game with a kill.
The third set featured the tightest effort featuring six ties over the first 20 rallies. C-N captured control winning 12 of the next 16 to go ahead 22-14. Hannah Robertson (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) stepped to the service line and notched back-to-back aces to seal the match.
Coker hit .092 as a unit pounding out a total of 27 kills. Taylor du Bray paced the club with 10 kills and 11 digs to go along with three aces. Christen Bragg handed out 25 assists with seven digs. Madison Bingle tossed in 11 scoops and five kills.
