Michael Wottreng starts his eighth year as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications and Broadcaster for Carson-Newman University. He is the media relations contact for volleyball, women's basketball and baseball.

On top of his media relations duties, he serves as the play-by-play broadaster for video and audio broadcasts of soccer, volleyball, women's basketball and baseball while filling in on football games. Wottreng is the color commentator for Carson-Newman football and has a segment on the Mike Turner Show. Wottreng has been the lead play-by-play broadcaster for the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championships since 2016.

Outside of Carson-Newman, Michael has been working at the University of Tennessee broadcasting baseball, basketball, softball, soccer and volleyball games for the SEC Network that have been featured on the ESPN app since the spring of 2018.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native has garnered awards at the national and regional levels since joining the staff prior to the 2013-14 school year winning a total of 10 top design honors from CoSIDA, one broadcasting award from the AVCA and two writing selections from the TSWA. His most recent haul winning gold in the Game Notes Winter Sports - College category for his work on Carson-Newman's women's basketball game notes.  The Marquette graduate took silver in the Spring Sports Game Notes - College category for Carson-Newman's baseball game notes package after winning the category the last two years. He finished fourth in the Fall Sports Game Notes package for his volleyball notes

He brought home three awards from the 2016-17 CoSIDA Publications and Digital Design Contest. The Marquette alumnus took first in the spring sports game notes category for his work on Carson-Newman's baseball game notes. His broadcasting prowess earn him second for a video feature on Dan Gallman that aired during the Ken Sparks Show in the fall. He finished third in the fall sports game notes category for his volleyball notes. In 2018, he swept the awards from CoSIDA for his game notes in volleyball, women's basketball and baseball.

His work with the volleyball program's run to the national quarterfinals helped him pick up recognition for his work at Carson-Newman during the summer of 2016. The American Volleyball Coaches' Association named Wottreng the broadcast winner of the Grant Burger Award, an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball.

The Tennessee Sportwriters' Association cited Wottreng's work as a writer for being second among authors for all Tennessee colleges for event writing in 2019 marking the second time he finished as a medalist.

Wottreng spent the summer of 2013 with the Tennessee Smokies, the Chicago Cubs' Double-A affiliate, as the team’s senior broadcast assistant. With the award-winning Smokies Radio Network, he filled several on-air roles including play-by-play and studio hosting, maintained the website for the Smokies Radio Network and assisted in video production of a variety of features that aired on WGN-TV in Chicago.

The Buckeye State native worked in the broadcasting department at Miami (Ohio) prior to joining the Smokies on Radio team. At Miami, Michael served as a play-by-play broadcaster for volleyball, baseball and softball and acted as a director for various basketball and hockey broadcasts.  During the summer of 2012, he was the play-by-play broadcaster for the East Texas Pump Jacks, a summer collegiate baseball league team. 

A May 2012 graduate of Marquette University, he was the sports director at Marquete University Radio (WMUR) for three years, where he was a play-by-play broadcaster for basketball, volleyball and soccer as well as a radio show host.  He worked for the athletic department broadcasting volleyball games including the 2011 Big East Tournament for the Big East Digital Network. Wottreng also was a TV host and reporter for Marquette University Television and a beat writer for the Marquette Tribune.
