Eagles and Tornados Split Saturday Doubleheader

BREVARD, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (8-6, 4-1 South Atlantic Conference) and Brevard Tornados (5-7, 3-2 South Atlantic Conference) split a doubleheader at Gil Coan Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Tornados won the first game 2-1 in nine innings, while the Eagles took the second game with a 2-0 win in seven innings. The teams will play a nine-inning rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.

Sophomore right-hander Quinton Yocum (2-1, 2.89 ERA) will close out Carson-Newman's weekend in Brevard by starting in Sunday's finale. Against Tusculum, Yocum earned the win while only allowing one unearned run on seven hits with eight strikeouts during his six and a third innings on the mound as the Eagles earned the sweep with a 2-1 win.

Game One: Brevard defeats Carson-Newman 2-1

The Tornados took the first game of the twin bill by winning a tight contest, 2-1.

The Eagles quickly took a lead in the top of the first when Bo Ausmus hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Brandon Roberts to put Carson-Newman on top 1-0.

Starting right-hander Chris Armstrong (2-2) kept the Eagles in front by tossing seven scoreless innings to keep Brevard off the scoreboard. The Tornados would get to Armstrong in the bottom of the eighth.

Brevard tied the game on an RBI single for Matthew Proffitt as he brought home Christian Christopoulos to even the score at one. A few batters later, an Armstrong wild pitch brought home Alex McGee to give the Tornados a 2-1 lead, which would be the final score.

Armstrong took the loss despite allowing two unearned runs on two hits with two walks and ten strikeouts. Brevard starter Kevin Hamilton (2-0) earned the win by pitching eight innings while allowing a run on six hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Alex Litaker earned the save by working a scoreless ninth.

Roberts was the top hitter in game one by going 3-for-4 at the plate with Carson-Newman's only run scored. Ausmus and Zach Long also recorded multi-hit games for the Eagles.

Game Two: Carson-Newman defeats Brevard 2-0

The Eagles responded after the game one defeat by winning the nightcap of the twin bill 2-0 in seven innings behind a dominant pitching performance by senior right-hander Alex Britt (2-1).

Britt earned his second-straight complete game win by pitching seven scoreless innings, only giving up five hits while walking one and striking out six.  He also earned a complete game win last week against no. 19 Tusculum.

Like the first game, Carson-Newman took its initial lead in the top of the first. Zach Long brought home Brandon Roberts on an RBI double to give Carson-Newman a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles' last run came in the top of the sixth. On a grounder hit by Kevin Franchetti, Trace Rogers scored while Bo Ausmus was out at second and Franchetti reached on a fielder's choice to put the Eagles' lead at 2-0, which would be the final score.

Britt earned the win while Brevard starter Nick Blackwood took the loss. Blackwood (0-1) pitched six and a third innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Ausmus and Bryan Everhart posted multi-hit games for the Eagles in game two, as both players went 2-for-3 at the plate.
