Wimbush one of 36 up for Harlon Hill Award

FLORENCE, Ala. - Carson-Newman senior running back Antonio Wimbush (Kingsland, Ga.) is one of 36 players nationally, and one of four from Super Region II, up for consideration for the Harlon Hill award, which is presented annually to the best college football player in NCAA Division II as voted on by D2 sports information directors.

The 2018 All-American and Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year has turned in one of the best careers by a Carson-Newman football running back.

Antonio Wimbush became the fourth member of Carson-Newman's 3,500-yard rushing club against Mars Hill. He is third all-time in rushing yards with 3,912. Wimbush needs 88 yards to beome C-N's third all-time 4,000 yard rusher.

He is 130 yards away from second and Kennth Tyson, and 244 yards away from first and Robert Thomas.

Wimbush's next 100-yard performance would give him 18 for his career, moving him into sole possession of second all-time. Wimbush is the sixth player in program history with 40 career rushing touchdowns. He needs two more rushing TDs to catch De'Andre Thomas for fourth on the all-time list.

This year, Wimbush has tallied 1,032 yards rushing on 138 carries and 11 touchdowns.  He is the sixth playing in Carson-Newman history with multiple 1,000-yard rushing campaigns.  He has joined the likes of Kenneth Tyson, Robert Thomas, Tyrone Westmoreland, Brandon Baker and Nate Inman.

The senior has especially had a gleam in his eye of late.  Over the last four weeks, Wimbush is averaging 135 yards per game on the ground.  He has eight rushing touchdowns in that span.

Wimbush and the rest of Carson-Newman's football team are in action in the second round of the NCAA playoffs Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne.  Kickoff with the sixth-ranked Bears is set for 2 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network begins one hour prior to kick on the AEC Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
