John Cryder opens his 19th season at Carson-Newman.

Cryder coached Trevor Makarov to All-SAC honors in 2019.  He saw Andrew Coulter earn spots on the NFF Hampshire Honor Society and CSC Academic All-District honors in 2022.

Cryder developed his position group in 2014 with James Phillips and Grant Janeway sharing starting duties.  Tight ends caught more passes this year than the previous two seasons combined.

The tight end position built depth in 2013 with James Phillips and Keith Reid both starting games for the Eagles. The positition even got involved in the Eagles' aerial assault as Phillips caught a TD in C-N's second round playoff game at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Cryder's 2012 was spent tutoring a youthful unit.  Keith Reid emerged as the Eagles' starter at the position working primarly as a blocking back.

Following the 2011 season, Cryder lost all three of his senior tight ends to graduation, including starters Eric Benton and Matt Cox.

Before coming to Carson-Newman, Cryder was a assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at State College High School in Pennsylvania. Cryder was honored with a coaching position at two Pennsylvania High School All-Star games.

Cryder is a 25-year veteran of the coaching ranks since graduating Penn State with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Education. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Carson-Newman.

Cryder resides in Jefferson City.
