Dan Redding is beginning his 10th consecutive season as defensive line coach at Carson-Newman and his 26th overall with the C-N football program.

Redding helped coach a formidible defensive front in his ninth year with the program. The Eagles led the South Atlantic Conference in rush defense in 2017 and featured a pair of All-SAC defensive linemen in sophomores Brian Bembry and Montel Presley.

For the 2015 season, Redding saw defensive linemen Phalen Booker and Jaysen Cook-Calhoun rank second and third in the SAC in sacks.  The Eagles ranked third in the league in sacks and led it for conference play alone.  Booker earned all-league honors.

Redding tutored defensive end William Alderman in 2014 to all-conference honors while also being named SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. Carson-Newman ranked second in the league with 2.30 sacks per game.

In 2013, Redding's defensive line featured Javaris Neal, a first team All-SAC and all-region selection.  The Eagles finished third in the SAC with 2.65 quarterback sacks a game.  They were also third in the league with 6.5 tackles for loss per contest.

Redding's 2012 defensive line was full of fresh faces after the graduation of four senior starters.  It mattered little as defensive tackle Deshon Collins leapt into the fray by garnering first team all-SAC honors.  Redding helped Bash Brother No. Two Zack Fleming lead the team in sacks and tackles for loss with four and eight, respectively.

In 2011 Redding coached a deep unit that included All-SAC first team defensive end Zeke Andrews and 2011 AFCA Good Works Team member and defensive leader Byron Bell.

During his tenures with the Eagles, Redding has coached lines that helped Carson-Newman win 13 South Atlantic Conference Championships and make 15 trips to the NCAA Division II or NAIA Playoffs as well as three national championship game berths.
Linemen mentored under Redding include former San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Cedric Killings, Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Torrie Griffin and Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins defensive end Junior Glymph. Nose guard Steve Mellon was a two-time NCAA Division II All-American and Glymph was named to multiple All-American teams in 2003.
Redding designed the Carson-Newman Athletic weight room in the Ken Sparks Athletic Complex.

A Catawba graduate, Redding began his coaching career at Randleman (N.C.) High School. In 1977 he joined the staff at Liberty University as an assistant coach, before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 1984.
Redding was named head coach of North Florida Christian School in 1988. In 1989 he began a two-year stint as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for Greenville (Ill.) College.
Redding and his wife, Christine, have three children; Dan, Jr., David and Becky as well as three grandchildren; Coleman, Aubrey and Kylie Ann.
