COLUMBUS, Ga. – The first tournament of the fall 2017 slate for Carson-Newman ended with the team finishing at sixth place on Tuesday at the Cougar Invitational. Five Eagle competitors shot 862 over 54 holes of play in an 18-team lineup.
After finishing the first two rounds at third on the leaderboard, the team was +10 to end the third round of play.
"This was a solid start to the season for our team," head coach Randy Wylie said. "Today's round started poorly since we fell to about 10th place but we were able to bounce back for a 6th place finish."
Jake Headrick maintained his position as the team leader on Tuesday, shooting a one-over 72 in the final round to place himself at 11th in the individual standings, his highest shooting round over the two days. He carded a final 212 after shooting a 71 and 69 on Monday. He was the only Eagle in the top-20 at the end of both days of competition.
"Jake's finish in the event was great," Wylie said of the junior. "Placing 11th was wonderful for him."
Sophomore Tom Forster and freshman Jackson Tyler tied at 37 on the overall leaderboard, both shooting 74 on Tuesday at +6 for the invitational.
Another freshman making his Eagle debut was Tyler Parker, ending his first collegiate outing with a 220, shooting +3 on Tuesday, 74, after posting a 71 and 75 in the first two rounds.
Anthony Marcinelli rounded out the Eagles squad tied at 66th, carding a 225. Tuesday brought a +6, 77, for the junior after a Monday showing of 81 and 67.
Host team Columbus State won the event with an 835 total score, shooting 17-under over three rounds. Florida Tech and St. Leo rounded out the top three with an 845 and 848, respectively. Florida Tech's Max O'Hagan grabbed the top individual score at eight-under par through 54 holes.
