JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Before the 2019-20 Carson-Newman men's golf season gets underway, Tom Forster will kickoff his senior year playing in the 119th U.S. Amateur at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. August 12-18.
The Northamptonshire, England-native is one of 312 competitors in the field this year for the world's top amateur event. The Amateur has seen numerous champions go on to become legends in the sport including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. Forster landed a spot in the event after shooting a 143 at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 22 during one of the 93 qualifiers.
The tournament will take place at Pinehurst's Course No. 2 and Course No. 4. Both courses will be used during the stroke-play rounds on the first two days, trimming the field down to just 64. The first five rounds of match play will be played exclusively at Course No. 2 from August 14-17 while the championship match on August 18 will be split with the morning round at Course No. 4 and afternoon at Course No. 2.
This past season, Forster received his third-straight All-America honor with a place on the second team list. He also made the semifinalist list for the Jack Nicklaus Award before gaining his third-straight All-Southeast Region nod from the GCAA and PING.
The three-time All-South Atlantic Conference selection holds the team's best career scoring average at 71.93 through nearly 90 rounds of play in just three years. He possesses the top three spots on the season records list for best-scoring average thanks to a 71.5 in the 2018-19 campaign. He follows that with a 72.1 and 72.2 in his sophomore and freshman years, respectively.
Forster has finished in the top five of 10 events in his career including victories at the 2019 Southern Tide Classic, 2018 Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate and 2018 SAC Championship.
Forster will get his time at the Amateur started in the first group of the event at hole one on Course No. 2 Monday at 7:15 a.m. EDT. Fans can follow his progress in the tournament through live scoring provided by the USGA. Coverage will be shown on FS1 from 4-7 p.m. from August 14-16 and from 12-2 p.m. on August 15.
