Eagles advance to SAC semifinals with 4-0 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The second-seeded Carson-Newman Eagles men's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Soccer Championship with a 4-0 victory over the seventh-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne Bears in the quarterfinal match of the tournament at McCown Field on Wednesday evening.

The Eagles will next head to Rock Hill, S.C., for the 2012 Food Lion SAC Soccer Championship Semifinals, which will be played on Friday Nov. 1 at Manchester Meadows.

"It was a great team performance," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "I don't think it was our best game but we kept working for opportunities but we scored the important goals to give us a cushion which gave us an opportunity to get some fresh legs out there which is what we needed to do before our next game on Friday."

The Eagles took the game's first lead in the 21st minute mark. Lucas Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) found the back of the net off of an assist by Rurik Pereira to give Carson-Newman a 1-0 advantage.

Named to the All-SAC second team earlier in the day, Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) picked up Carson-Newman's second goal in the 28th minute mark off of an assist by Joao Pedro Dowsley (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Welo scored his second goal of the day in the 36th minute mark on an unassisted goal to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead, which would be the score at the end of the first period.

Carson-Newman quickly added to its total when the second period began. In the 49th minute mark, another All-SAC defender Even Kelly  (Galway, Ireland) scored his first goal of the year on an assist by Welo on a corner kick to put the Eagles' lead at 4-0.

Carson-Newman would outshoot Lenoir-Rhyne 17-13 in the match, including an 8-4 advantage for the Eagles in the first half.

2012 All-SAC first teamer and Carson-Newman goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) earned the shutout victory. In nearly 85 minutes between the posts, Le Guevel did not allow a goal and made seven saves. Micah-Jon Varner (Charlotte, N.C.) finished the match between the posts for the Eagles, preserving the shutout. Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Stefan Dill took the loss, giving up four goals while making three saves.

The Eagles will next play third-seeded Lincoln Memorial, who won 1-0 earlier today over sixth-seeded Catawba, in Friday Nov. 2's semifinal in Rock Hill. The match will begin at 7 p.m. The winner of Friday's semifinal will play for the SAC Tournament title on Sunday Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
