JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- After starting out on a good note in doubles play, Carson-Newman was unable to keep the momentum going into singles and fell 5-2 to Anderson (S.C.) Tuesday afternoon.
"We did well in doubles, which is what we've been working hard on lately," Head coach Jim Frederick said. "But we just couldn't hold it together in singles today."
The only doubles duo that struggled today was Joseph Stiles (New Oxford, Penn.) and Victor Ireno (Sau Paulo, Brazil) who could not get a game off Ignacio Bidegain and Preston Morpeth fell 6-0 at the No. 3 position. The other two pairs handled their matches with ease as Jesus Bacete-Sanz (Madrid, Spain) and Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) took down Spencer Brown and Adam Kush 6-3 at No. 1. Made up of Hernan Toledo (Santiago, Chile) and Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), the No. 2 duo also came out on top against Jeffrey Dayton and Hufelder Duarte 6-2.
Up 1-0 going into singles play, the Eagles were ready to compete. However, Dabdab was the only one to get a win out of the six singles as everyone else fell in straight sets. Competing at the No. 2 position, Dabdab defeated Dayton handily 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 1, Toledo was defeated by Bidegain 6-2, 6-2, Oka fell to Brown 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, and Bantel was defeated by Kush 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Bacete-Sanz gave Depaggio a run for his money in the first set and served for it twice before falling 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5. Stiles rounded out the lineup for the Eagles at No. 6 and fell to Morpeth fell 6-0, 6-1.
