DAHLONEGA, Ga. – In an offensive clinic, Carson-Newman scored its most points in over 30 seasons in the UNG Nighthawks Classic to beat Georgia College 115-73 Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
The 115 points for Carson-Newman (5-0) is the third-most scored in the history of the program behind a 125-58 win over Bristol on Dec. 8, 1986 and a 123-37 victory at Milligan on Feb. 5, 1979.
Overall 11 players scored in the contest for the Lady Eagles as the unit shot 56 percent from the field in the game burying 14 triples, one shy of the program record.
"We turned the ball over on our last two possessions before half leading to four unanswered points by Georgia College," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "We lost all of the momentum at thtat points going from a 20-point lead to 16. We challenged them at the half and they definitely responded. They played with a level of passion and intensity that we need all the time."
Haris Price (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) stuffed the stat sheet for a third straight game with 22 points, six assists, six steals and rebounds as the junior went seven-for-nine from the floor.
Briana Smith (Nashville, Tenn.) went eight-for-12 from the flor scoring 19 points and Mika Wester (Newport, Tenn.) missed one of her nine shot attempts scoring 18 points with three assists and three steals.
Rounding out a group of four double-digit scorers, Kelci Marosites (Elizabethton, Tenn.) had 14 points with four three-pointers while collecting three rebounds.
Carson-Newman forced 20 turnovers on the day and converted that into 34 points while outrebounding Georgia College (1-3) 45-39.
The Lady Eagles did not trail at any point during the game as a driving layup from to put the cap on a 10-2 start to the day in the first three minutes. A three-pointer by Kelci Marosites with 20 ticks in the opening quarter made it a 26-15 tally.
A triple from Brianna Davis cut the deficit to 13 points at 40-27 with 4:10 to go before halftime. C-N rattled off nine of 11 to open up the first 20-point lead of the day at 49-29 with 1:22 remaining. Delayne Rotolo and Keyonna Wesley made layups in the final 20 seconds to make it a 49-33 contest at the break.
C-N produced one of the best offensive frames in the history of the school going 18-for-25 from the field and seven-for-10 from long range putting up 47 points. In the first 5:23 of the third, the Lady Eagles outscored the Bobcats 28-4 to stretch the lead to 77-37. Kelci Marosites put the punctuation on the quarter with a three-pointer with 12 seconds to go to make it 96-52.
"The third quarter was fun to watch," Mincey said. "This has been a great first week for our program and our group answered the call by playing the first five games on the road. We look forward to being in Holt Fieldhouse Tuesday night."
Madison Bunch (Morristown, Tenn.) scored eight points in the fourth quarter as none of Mincey's five starters played a minute in the frame. Bunch hit a three-pointer and Tori Griffin (Strawberry Plains, Tenn.) made a short jumper to close out the affair.
Sydney Cleveland paced the Bobcats with 21 points and five caroms. Alyah McGriff finished the day with 17 points and six boards while Ta'Asia Wright had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
