JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Ninth-ranked Carson-Newman used its largest run of the season, a 25-0 sequence spanning the third and fourth quarters, to pummel Newberry by the largest margin in the history of the series 90-53 in South Atlantic Conference play Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.
Carson-Newman (18-1, 10-1) and Newberry (10-8, 5-6) have met 45 times with the 37-point differential the largest for either side. The prior high was a 32-point victory by C-N on Feb. 25, 2004.
Prior to today, the longest run for the Lady Eagles was a 22-0 opening of the Shorter contest on Nov. 21, 2017. Mincey's team had a 29-0 spurt against Coker on Jan. 16, 2016.
The Lady Eagles forced 25 turnovers converting the giveaways to 25 points and picked up 18 offensive rebounds turning those into 22 second-chance points.
Newberry started the game on an 8-2 run as C-N started the game 1-for-9 from the field. Newberry's lead was 10-5 with 4:31 to go in the first frame when the Lady Eagles rattled off nine unanswered points to take their first lead at 14-10.
Regan McCarty put in a layup with 1:32 to go in the opening 10 minutes for the only bucket that the Wolves would get over a nine-minute span starting the second one for 10 from the floorr. Overall it was a 20-2 run that lasted until the 5:44 mark of the second stanza as C-N ballooned its lead to 25-12.
Samara Hill buried a deep three-pointer from the right wing to make it a nine-point game with 2:13 to go before the break. A late burst from the home group gave Mincey's team a 12-point bulge at halftime, 35-23.
It was a 12-point game with 2:58 to go in the third quarter as Regan McCarty hit a pair of triples for Newberry. The Lady Eagles responded with 10 straight points to close the quarter as Haris Price (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) stole the ball in the backcourt at the top of the key, tracked it down on the left wing and buried a triple as the buzzer sounded to make it a 63-41 game entering the fourth.
Carson-Newman did not let its foot off of the pedal stretching the run into the final stanza scoring the first 15 points of the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Five players scored in double figures for Carson-Newman led by 17 points from Wester to go along with five assists and five rebounds. Price registered 12 points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Kayla Marosites (Elizabethton, Tenn.) recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Kelci Marosites ended the day with 13 points and she handed four assists. Katie Stubblefield (Alcoa, Tenn.) finished with 12 points, four rebounds and a career-high three blocks.
Newberry was led by Meg Essex's 16 points while Shelby Britten chipped in 11 and McCarty had 10 in the game for the Wolves.
