TAZEWELL, Tenn. – No. 25 Carson-Newman used a six-shot improvement on Tuesday from the first round to close out the State Farm Intercollegiate with a third-place finish on Tuesday at the Woodlake Golf Club.

C-N was sitting in third by the turn at five-over. Cummins and Frövenholt were leading the Eagles as the only two in the top 10 while seven sat in the top 20. They closed out the round at 12-over. Nine shots total separated the entire Eagles' group by the end of the event.

Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland) paced the group for a second-straight round, finishing with a share of second-place at one-over. She ended up just three shots out of the lead.

"It was better today," Carson-Newman coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "Yesterday, was a little rough. Obviously, Maeve was spectacular. Great for her to see the course to defend her title. The other girls struggled a little bit. I think just with the hills and the speed of the greens, they struggled.

"Today, we were packed. We all shot close to the same, the depth all the way through, even our two individuals so I'm really pleased about that."

Cummins was three-over heading into the back-nine on a trio of bogeys. She finished up the tournament with just a birdie and bogey back-to-back early in the back half. She was named to the All-Tournament team with her performance.

Seven shots behind the sophomore was individual Matilda Frövenholt (Öjersjö, Sweden) tied for 12th. She carded a birdie on the second hole of the day before a string of bogeys on the last three holes put her at two-over heading into the afternoon. She was five-over in the back half due mostly to a trio of bogeys.

Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.) was five-shots better in the final round at two-over, moving her to 14th. She was even for her first five holes before collecting a birdie and two bogeys down the stretch of the morning to be one-over at the turn.  She carded the same score in the back half for a 74 on the day.

A trio of Eagles held down 16th on the leaderboard, all shooting a 155 for the week.

Elly Carlson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), playing as an individual, was also five-shots better on the day with a 75. The sophomore had the most par shots in the front nine with eight, the only difference being a bogey on the par-3 third. She carded three more bogeys in the back nine.

Ellie Haughton (Lincolnshire, England) closed out her first event in the Orange and Blue The freshman carded the most birdies in the front nine compared to her C-N counterparts with three but a bogey and double-bogey had her sitting even at the turn. She packed on three more bogeys in the back nine with two birdies to help her to her +11 showing. She was the best par-3 scorer for the tournament with a three-under average on such holes.

Jayla Sims (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) was even for seven of her first nine holes outside of the pair of bogeys she collected. The junior went into the clubhouse with three more bogeys along with a birdie and double-bogey.

Reagan Kinnie (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) rounded out the Eagles on the leaderboard with a 13-over outing on a 21st-place finish. She opened the day with a bogey before shooting another down the stretch to sit at two-over heading to the 10th hole. She was one par for just three shots in the back half.

No. 24 Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne tied for the top spot in the tournament at nine-over but Wingate was deemed the victor. On the player side, Sam Fritzinger was the top medalist with a two-under 142.

The Eagles get to take a couple week away from outside competition to prepare for the Winthrop Invitational. The one-day event will take place on October 7 from the Rock Hill Country Club in Rock Hill, S.C.
