ROCK HILL, SC – The Carson-Newman women's soccer team placed four players on the 2010 All-South Atlantic Conference teams, league officials announced Thursday.
Senior midfielder Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.), junior forward Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), sophomore midfielder Andrea Saevik (Froystadvaag, Norway) were named to the first team, while senior defender Melissa Morris (Sweetwater, Tenn.) received second team honors.
Under their guidance, the Lady Eagles went 11-7 overall and 8-1 in the conference, winning a share of the SAC regular season title.
Gruenfelder, who is now a three-time All-SAC selection, ranks fourth in the conference in goals scored (10), fifth in points (25) and eighth in assists (five). Howell, who earns first team honors for a second straight year, was third in the league in goals scored (12) and fourth in points (28). Saevik earns first team honors for a second consecutive season after scoring six goals and distributing five assists.
Morris has received All-SAC accolades all three seasons she has been with the Lady Eagles. She anchored the C-N defense this season and finished the year with two goals and one assist.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior midfielder Catherine Hauck, who helped lead the Bears to the South Atlantic Conference championship, was named the 2010 Women's Soccer Player of the Year, while Lenoir-Rhyne coach Adrian Blewitt was named Women's Soccer Coach of the Year and L-R's Denesha Soto was named the conference's Co-Freshman of the Year, the league announced.
The Scholar Athlete Award for women's soccer went to Abby Martin of Mars Hill College, who wins for the second year in a row.
Hauck, a junior midfielder from Lake Mary, Fla. (Lake Mary HS), had five goals and two assists in conference matches for the Bears. She also scored the game-winning goal for Lenoir-Rhyne's 1-0 victory over Lincoln Memorial University in Tuesday's Food Lion SAC Tournament quarterfinal match.
Blewitt wins the Women's Soccer Coach of the Year award for the first time in his career. He won the SAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year award in 2006. He becomes the first coach in conference history to win both awards.
Soto, a freshman midfielder from Dale City, Va. (Forest Park HS), shared the Freshman of the Year award with Juliana Conte from Catawba College. Soto had one assist on the year. Conte, a forward/midfielder from Hampton, Ontario, Canada (Holy Trinity Catholic), scored three goals and ranked third in the conference with seven assists.
Lenoir-Rhyne led the way on the All-Conference team with seven selections. Joining Hauck on the first team are forward Amber Holt, defender Casey McDonnell and goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs. Midfielder Elizabeth Hawes, the 2009 Player and Freshman of the Year, is joined on the second team by midfielder Kaelia Frazier and defender Jessica Schob.
Lincoln Memorial University had four named to the All-Conference team. Forwards Sarah Taylor and Becky Thompson were joined on the second team by midfielder Leanne Reid and defender Raquel Abrile.
Mars Hill College had three All-Conference selections. Martin, a forward, was joined on the first team by defender Brittany Downs, while goalkeeper Chelsea Parker was named to the second team.
Wingate University also had three All-Conference selections. Midfielder Izabella Miranda and defender Kelly Moldenhauer were chosen to the first team, while forward Kerstin Williams was selected to the second team.
Tusculum College had two All-Conference selections. Forward Tramicka James was named to the first team, while midfielder Courtney Turner was named to the second team.
Catawba College had one selection as defender Alexa Baird was named to the first team.
Brevard College forward Allie Hovis was named to the second team.
Newberry College had one All-Conference selection in second-team defender Cassie Smith.
The All-Conference teams are selected by the league's head coaches.
The Fair Play Award for women's soccer went to Anderson and Lincoln Memorial. The award goes to the team that demonstrates good sportsmanship in conference play.
