Eagles head to Georgia Gwinnett Invitational as fall season nears conclusion

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team will travel to Lawrenceville, Georgia for the Gwinnett Invitational on Oct. 11th, 2019.

Fourteen programs will attend the event including South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum as well as familiar foes Emmanuel and Belmont Abbey.

Also featured will be Division I The Citadel and of course Georgia Gwinnett, the host of the tournament, a program that has won 11 NAIA National Championships.

Freshman Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) aims to improve upon her performances at the University of the Cumberlands Tournament and the ITA Southeast Regional qualifiers which saw her combine for three singles victories and two losses.

"If she's physically fine, she'll do fine," Carson-Newman coach Jim Frederick said. "She's been doing good in practice, playing up the court as much as she can, playing the ball as early as she can."

Junior Hannah Price (Knoxville, TN) is slated to match up against a South Atlantic Conference all-conference selection from Tusculum in her first singles match.

"All of the Tusculum kids, except the new one, we have scouting reports and that'll help," Frederick said.

Junior Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA) looks to better her previous performance at the University of the Cumberlands Tournament that saw her win her first singles match but lose the following two in third-set tiebreakers.

Doubles play will consist of Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) while Resende and Price will be the other pair.

"For Alisa and Klara, Klara is the steadier of the two while Alisa provides the power," Frederick said. "I think that's what makes the best team."

Both the women's "A" and "B" tournaments consist of 32 players total. It is technically possible for one Carson-Newman athlete to play another in this format, which is what happened at the Wingate Invitational on Sept. 7th, 2019 when men's freshman Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) was matched up with senior Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Jeneiro).

"We'd like that to happen because that can only happen in a later round," Frederick said.
