Quartet of singles wins prevails for win over Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Singles play from No. 1 down to No. 6 held mostly true as Carson-Newman women's tennis was able to earn its first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season against Newberry in 5-2 fashion.

Saturday afternoon's victory for the Eagles (5-3, 1-1 SAC) steers the team back in the right direction after Wednesday's defeat at the hands of Wingate to open SAC play. Meanwhile, Newberry (14-3, 1-1 SAC) finds themselves in a slump as losers of three out of its last four after winning 13-straight matches in fall and spring non-conference play.

Doubles action began with the top duo of Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Abby Reis (Des Moines, Iowa) claiming a 6-0 victory. No. 3 doubles pairing Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Tash Forrest (Jersey, United Kingdom) would seal the opening match point with a 6-1 triumph.

Singles play continued a dominant day for Resende, who swept Newberry's Judit Gonzalez Agud by a 6-1, 6-3 scoreline. Price also claimed victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Lucy Spice 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Ukranian Alisa Liashova earned her first victory in SAC play on the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Lucia Davila at No. 5 singles. In the No. 6 hole, Klara Vuckovic (Reutlingen, Germany) defeated Madison Conwell 6-2, 6-2.

With the win, the Eagles now own the series head-to-head by an 8-7 margin. C-N are winners of three out of the last four meetings between the two sides dating back to 2017.

Next week is the beginning of a grueling stretch of matches for C-N, who will see four matches in eight days beginning March 11 against Lincoln Memorial at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex. Opening serve from Mossy Creek is slated for 2 p.m. against the Railsplitters.
