JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Madison Rademacher handed out a season-high 25 assists and finished with 17 digs for her third double-double of the season as Carson-Newman toppled Queens in four sets, 25-23, 25-19, 13-25 and 25-16, Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference play at Holt Fieldhouse.
"Madi is a good defender and serves well," Carson-Newman coach Dave Franklin said. "Our setters were huge this weekend for the offense. With Elena [Vasquez] going down, our setters have been challenged. Those two needed to grow and are being challenged. There has been a shift in mentality and understanding what the game demands me to do."
Carson-Newman (13-11, 9-8) breaks a 7-7 tie in the all-time series winning for the sixth time in eight tries during the regular season against Queens (12-13, 9-9).
Megan Oldenburger (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Marnie Streeter (Goldvein, Va.) had 13 of the 16 Eagles kills in the first frame. Eleven ties and six lead changes were thrown in during a back-and-forth effort. C-N opened up a 17-14 edge only to allow seven of the next eight to Queens. A 4-0 spurt put the home group back on top as Streeter's blast capped a 7-2 sequence to end the game.
The second stanza was another tight affair as conflicting 6-1 sequences saw the Royals take a 13-11 lead. A 6-0 run for the Eagles put C-N back on top 17-13 as the unit would never trail again. Using a 7-1 stretch to close it out, Franklin's group broke an 18-all tie.
Queens opened up the third set by winning 11 of the first 15. The Eagles could never find a groove committing 10 attack errors as the Royals hit .300 and a smash from Jordan Proszenyak ended the game to send the contest to the fourth set.
In the fourth, the Eagles won eight of the first nine gaining a bulge that was enough to win the match. Queens came back to make it 11-10, but C-N won the next six and closed out the contest on a service ace by Taylor Rohr (Windsor, Colo.).
On the day, C-N compiled a .178 hitting clip with 51 kills, 83 digs, six blocks and five aces while Queens countered with a .096 margin on 39 kills to go on top of 75 digs, 11 aces and four rejections.
It was a big day for the outside hitters as Streeter finished with 19 kills hitting at a .341 efficiency. Oldenburger registered 17 blasts with 14 scoops for her third double-double in a row.
"They make my job so easy setting them," Rademacher said. "I love setting them. They make it where I don't have to be perfect. They make a swing and there is complaining or anything. It's awesome. I love playing with them and helping them grow."
With 28 digs and six assists, Morgan Ballard (Weaverville, N.C.) led all players in scoops. Rohr added 16 assists and six digs.
Casey Tarvin, the league's leader in kills, ended the match with 15 kills and 16 digs pacing the Royals in both categories on the day.
Mallory Swarts handed out 33 assists and picked up 12 digs and three aces. Proszenyak tallied nine kills, 13 digs and four aces.
