Carson-Newman Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1987

Class of 1987

John Hutchins (1925) -- “Hutch” was described by Frosty Holt as the greatest runningback he ever coached. Captain of the football team, All-Southern and All-State selections three consecutive years, Hutchins was tabbed as the best college player in Tennessee his senior year. He also played basketball and baseball.

Paul Layman (1935) -- Paul Laymen played four years of football as an end and punter, captained and played center for the basketball team four seasons, and was an outstanding baseball pitcher. His “hardball” prowess earned him pitching stints with Newport and the Chattanooga Lookouts.

Don King (1924) -- A versatile athlete of the early 20s, King matched Frosty Holt’s performance by earning letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He played halfback on the Fighting Parsons football squad, was a guard during basketball season, and spent his springs running track and playing first base on the baseball team.

Albert R. Sloan (1932) -- A servant to Carson-Newman and college athletics, Mr. Sloan was a professor of math at C-N (40 years), treasurer and business manager 20 years, active in the Smoky Mountain and Volunteer State Athletic Conferences for 39 years, District Eligibility Chairman for more than two decades, and a member of the NAIA National Hall of Fame.
