Class of 1988

Charles H. Hamblen (1939) -- All Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference four consecutive years, Hamblen was captain and leading scorer of the 1938-39 basketball team. He was a successful high school and college coach in Tennessee and Florida, college professor and administrator, as well as active in education and politics in the state of Georgia.

Nick Hyder (1957) -- Hyder was an outstanding runningback and leading scorer on the 1956 football team. A popular student while in college, he was honored as Distinguished Alumnus in 1984. Hyder is recognized as one of America’s top high school football coaches. Active in Baptist life, he is in constant demand as a clinician and publications writer.

Chris Jones (1962) -- Carson-Newman’s first All American in any sport, Chris Jones still holds several Eagle Basketball records. He was a third round draft choice of the Cincinnati Royals. A successful high school coach in Georgia and Tennessee, Jones later directed the Carson-Newman team to an impressive 182-63 record from 1982-1988.

Milton Nixon (1937) -- Nixon played center and linebacker on C-N’s only undefeated football team of 1936 and was a forward on the 1937 basketball squad that lost only one game that season. He attended college on both academic and athletic scholarships, graduating cum laude. An active churchman, Nixon was an educator coach, civic leader, and Mason.
