Carson-Newman Cheer/Dance Waiver

 

2022-2023 C-N Spirit Squads Tryout Information

Tryouts will be held for the Carson-Newman University Cheerleading team, Dance team, and the Mascot (Talon) on April 22nd-24th. There will be a $25 tryout fee. The times for tryouts are as followed:

 

Cheer and Mascot:

April 22nd: 5:00-8:00pm 

April 23rd: 8:00am-12:30pm 

April 24th: 2:00-6:00pm 

Dance:

April 22nd: 4:00-8:00pm 

April 23rd: 2:30am-8:30pm 

April 24th: 2:00-6:00pm 

 

The following are the list of requirements for each tryout:

Spirit Program Requirements (expected from all cheerleaders, dancers, and mascots):

  • Acceptance letter to C-N
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA
  • Release waiver
  • Copy of current physical

Cheerleading Requirements:

  • Good form and techniques in the following jumps        
    • Toe touch
    • Pike
    • Front hurdler (right and left)
  • Standing or running back handspring
    • Other tumbling is highly encouraged and will benefit you in the scoring process
  • Good stunt technique in the following stunts:
    • Extension
    • Lib
    • Full cradle
  • Individual interview

Each cheerleader will be expected to participate in jumps, tumbling, stunting, signs, motions, and an individual interview. Cheerleaders will be scored in each category that will create a final score that will determine their placement on the team. Cheerleaders need to wear the following:

  • Grey, black, or white shorts
  • Grey, black, or white fitted tank or t-shirt
  • White cheerleading shoes (with white socks)
  • White bow or ribbon

Dance Team Requirements:

  • Good form and technique in the following skills
    • Triple pirouette
    • Right, left, and middle split
    • Right, left, and middle leap
    • Toe touch
    • Turns in second (3 seconds into double)
    • Kicks
    • Bonus skill(s)
  • Solo (1 minute)
    • Choose a style of dance that highlights your personal skills and strengths.
  • Game day material
    • Spiriting, motions, and sideline etiquette
  • Individual interview

 Each dancer will be scored on technique, performance, and overall impression in the above skills and categories. The scores from each section will be added together to determine the dancer’s placement on the team. Dancers need to wear the following:

  • Grey, black, or white leggings
  • Grey, black, or white fitted tank
  • Sneakers, jazz shoes, and turners
  • Hair in a low ponytail or bun

Mascot Requirements:

  • Improvisation
    • Respond to any circumstance, use people or props around you, dance, and bring Talon to life!
  • Skit
    • The skit needs to be 1-3 minutes. The skit should include dancing, props, and crowd involvement. Communicate the idea and make Talon seem alive!
  • Individual interview

Each mascot will be scored on crowd appeal, originality/creativity, motions, walk, character development, and their interview. The scores from each section will be added together to determine the mascot’s placement on the team. Mascots need to wear the following:

  • T-shirt and shorts that allow movement
  • Sneakers
