Roman Botcharnikov began his pole vaulting career in Sochi, Russia in 1979. As an athlete he was able to achieve national status in Russia in the late part of 1980s. He began his coaching career in 1991 in Australia, working with Australian Barcelona Olympic Team members in pole vault and decathlon as well as other elite and junior pole vaulters.

Roman Botcharnikov came to United States in the fall of 1992 and took position of assistant pole vault coach at Missouri Valley College (NAIA), where he coached all-Americans for two seasons.   In 1994 he transferred to Central Missouri State University (NCAA-II) when he also coached all-Americans including NCAA-II Champion and school record holder Andrey Skvortsov (5.50m)

Roman Botcharnikov has participated in American pole vault resurgence in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He coached American Record Holder, World Champion, Olympic Silver Medalist, multiple National Champion and Pole Vault Hall of Fame inductee - Lawrence Johnson 1996-1997 and 2000-2001. Roman Botcharnikov also influenced a number leading American pole vaulters men and women as well as high school Tennessee State Champions and a State Record holder Jeff Trembley.

Publishing popular articles in pole vault in the early 2000s, Roman Botcharnikov returned to coaching in 2011, assisting female pole vaulters: Angel Rummans 2012 Olympic Trials Qualifier at the age of twenty (PR 4.40m), Katie Nageotte (PR 4.50m) #29 World Rank as of July 1st, 2014.

Having an extensive experience in coaching athletes of both genders, levels and abilities Roman Botcharnikov expects to recruit and coach to victory, driven pole vaulters who aspires to be a vital part of the Carson-Newman Track & Field Team.
