Aaron Hutsell opens his second season as the Eagles' linebackers coach after six seasons as Carson-Newman’s defensive backs coach and his ninth overall after spending his first season coaching wide receivers for the Eagles.  He has coached all-conference defensive backs in all six years of his tenure as defensive backs coach.

Hutsell's first year as Carson-Newman's linebackers coach in 2017 was a productive one.  He helped linebacker Sha'Heem Stupart close out his career as Carson-Newman's sixth all-time leading tackler.  Stupart earned all-region and all-conference honors under Hutsell's tutelage.

Hutsell coached his second All-America defensive back and the Eagles' first All-American safety since the late nineties when Jerry Miclisse grabbed the accolades from Don Hansen's Football Gazette in 2016.

Xavier McFadden made it six straight years for all-conference defensive backs under Hutsell. McFadden was a first team selection after leading the team in tackles. McFadden was also a third team all-region selection by Don Hansen's Football Gazette, giving Hutsell three straight seasons with an all-region performer.

In 2014, Jerry Miclisse earned first team All-SAC and second team all-region honors after leading the team in tackles.

In 2013, Hutsell saw one of his DBs grab All-American honors for the first time.  Eien Jacob ranked second in the league with five picks and 42nd in the nation en route to garnering All-American status from Don Hanen's Football Gazette.

Hutsell coached a talented secondary in 2012 that saw corner Oliver Davis and safety Issac Kinley earn second team all-SAC honors.  Four different members of the secondary picked off passes, led by Sean Rawson's three.

Tarvin Jones and Oliver Davis were both second team all-SAC selections for Hutsell in 2011, while Mario Russell and Jones earned first team honors in 2010.

Before joining Carson-Newman in 2010, Hutsell was an assistant coach at Murray State for four seasons, coaching wide receivers in 2009 and defensive backs from 2006-08.  While coaching the Racers, his 2009 punt return team was the fouth best in the nation, averaging nearly 18 yards a return.

Hutsell helped coach Derrick Townsel - a 2nd team All-OVC selection at wide receiver and kick returner. Townsel was signed by the Houston Texans and is now in the Canadian Football League.  He also coached current Detroit Lion WR Marcus Harris.

Prior to Murrary State, Hutsell coached at Springfield College.  He helped the Division III Pride to a number 5 ranking.

Hutsell was a three-year starter and four-year tight end for Western Maryland from 1999-2002, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree. Hutsell was a key component of four consecutive Centennial Conference championship teams and helped the Green Terror reach the NCAA Division III playoffs three times.

Hutsell earned his master’s degree in secondary education from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

Hutsell and his wife, Lydia, live in Morristown with their daughters Lillian and Allison.
