BRISTOL, Tenn. –The 21st-ranked Carson-Newman Lady Eagles
used 34 points from their bench to beat King College, 73-64, ending
a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night in Bristol, Tenn.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 17-3 overall and pick up
their first win since Jan. 21.
Seniors Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) and Ashley Kyle (Jefferson
City, Tenn.) paced the Lady Eagles with 14 points apiece.
Buford also added 10 rebounds to grab the double-double, but it was
the Lady Eagle bench that made things tough on the Tornados.
Junior Katlin Moore (Fort Mill, S.C.) led the Lady Eagles bench
with 14 points, while freshman Dominique Jackson (N. Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla.) added 10.
Carson-Newman grabbed the lead for good at the 17:10 mark of the
first half, but it was an 18-3 surge to close the first half and
open the second, that saw the Lady Eagles seize control.
After a jumper by King’s Beth Raby to cut the C-N lead to
24-21 with 3:47 to play in the first half, the Lady Eagles answered
with a 14-3 run sparked by 12 points from its bench. Moore and
Jackson each had a score during the stretch, while freshman Tasha
Phillips (Clarkrange, Tenn.) chipped in a three-point play to help
the Lady Eagles pull away.
Phillips finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
Freshman Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.), who started in place of
Zoriah Williams (Calera, Ala.), opened the second half with a pair
of free throws and a layup as the lady Eagles built a 42-24 lead
with 19:01 left to play.
King would cut the lead to single digits inside of five minutes,
but C-N would make six-straight free throws in the final two
minutes to seal the win.
Carson-Newman forced 25 turnovers and grabbed 25 offensive rebounds
to offset a poor shooting night. It finished just 33 percent
(27-of-80) from the floor.
Raby led King with 15 points.
The Lady Eagles return to conference play on Saturday night at home
against Mars Hill College. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. in Holt
Fieldhouse.
