ROCK HILL, S.C. – Carson-Newman athletics saw a school record 136 student athletes named to the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll when the league office unveiled the list Monday morning.
The 136 student athletes is a 55 percent increase for Carson-Newman, which put 88 student athletes on the honor roll last year. Carson-Newman tied with Lenoir-Rhyne for the second most honorees, Queens led the league with 138 selections.
"Our first obligation when we think of student athletes is to think of the student," Carson-Newman Director of Athletics Allen Morgan said. "We're pleased with the increase in the number of students that made this list. Their dedication reflects well on the field, which we believe also translates well back to the classroom. Our goal is to produce great students who are also athletes."
To be eligible for inclusion on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, student-athletes must have competed in a sponsored championship sport and maintained a cumulate GPA of 3.30 or higher throughout the academic year.
"SAC student-athletes are among the most well-rounded individuals on their respective campuses," South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz said. "I'm extremely proud of the efforts made by our student-athletes and support staffs in making 2014-15 another record-breaking year in the classroom. We had over 100 more honorees this year than in 2013-14 so I think it's safe say our vision of preparing our student-athletes academically as well as athletically is a reality."
In terms of raw numbers, Carson-Newman football led the way with 22 honorees, followed by men's soccer with 20 and women's soccer with 18. Baseball had the fourth highest number with 15.
In terms of percentage of athletes on the roster receiving the accolade, 63 percent of both the women's golf roster and men's soccer roster gathered spots on the honor roll. More than half the women's basketball team, women's soccer team, men's golf team and volleyball team also garnered the accolade.
A record 1,329 student-athletes, spanning each of the South Atlantic Conference's 12 member institutions and 18 sports, were named to the 2014-15 SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll. The number of honorees represents an increase of 102 student-athletes from last year's list.
Tusculum put 129 student-athletes on the honor roll, followed by Newberry with 126. Wingate had 123 honorees, while Mars Hill had 118 student-athletes honored. Coker had 114 honor roll recipients and Catawba notched 110 student-athletes on the honor roll. Anderson had 98, Lincoln Memorial had 95 and Brevard had 83 honorees.
