Carson-Newman bounces back from opening loss to split with Columbus State

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman starter Mary Shealy bounced back from a rocky outing in the opener to allow only three hits in a 6-4 win in Game 2as C-N split a doubleheader with Columbus State on Saturday afternoon in Jefferson City. CSU won the first game, 5-0.

With the win, C-N improves moves to 8-4 on the year. Columbus State is now 4-5.

Shealy allowed just four hits, all singles, and picked up a C-N defense that committed four errors to secure a split with the Game 2 win. The senior struck out one and induced eight fly ball outs to move to 8-4 on the year.

C-N provided early and late run support as it had to rally after a fast start.

After Shealy worked a perfect top of the first, C-N grabbed a quick 2-0 lead as leadoff Jessica Morgan singled and catcher Bri Shoemake followed with an RBI double to spark the offense. Freshman Shelby Robertson scored on Shoemake's double after reaching on error while trying to move Morgan up on a sacrifice.

Columbus State responded in the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of walks and an error by Shealy in the frame. Nina Rubio had a two-run single in the inning to give CSU a 4-2 lead.

Sophomore Sara Kelley's bases-loaded double was the big blow in a three-run third as C-N regained the lead for good. Kelley ripped a double off of CSU starter Taylor Turner to score Caitlyn Lance, who also doubled, Bethany Davis, and Kim Whaley to give C-N a 5-4 lead.

The Lady Eagles added an insurance run in the fourth as Davis again walked and Whaley belted an RBI double to build the lead to the game's final score at 6-4.

Whaley led C-N with two hits, going 2-for-3.

The Cougars would manage only two baserunners, both reaching on errors, in the final four innings.

Columbus State won the first game, 5-0. It had all five extra-base hits in the game to cruise against the sluggish Lady Eagles.

Carson-Newman returns to action on Monday against Lees-McRae. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at the C-N Softball Complex.
