ATLANTA, Ga. – Carson-Newman swimming earned third place on both men's and women's squads after day one of the Emory Invitational.
"The willingness for people to get up and race stood out to me," said head coach Ben Young. "After making the drive to Atlanta today, the team got out and got ready. Lots of quality racing and the way that we piece races together stood out and I thought we did a really great job."
The men's team locked down third place overall scoring a total of 194. Coming ahead of Carson-Newman was Emory University in first place with 364 and fellow SAC school Wingate earning second place with 251 points. Arthur Gluzman secured the Eagles only first place finish after day one. Gluzman earned first in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 44.64.
On the women's side the team also earned third overall ending day one with a score of 199. Placing in front of the Eagles was Emory University with a score of 394 and Wingate in second with 233 points. Olivia Muir, Megan Corcoran, Emma Bowling, and Lily Parr worked to earn a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:35.95. Megan Corcoran also earned third in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:04.58.
"On the women's side, Kate Salsbury from a time standpoint maybe didn't throw down the fastest times, but she's coming off a lot of sickness over the last three and a half weeks," said Young. "Being a distance swimmer, she came on the other side of that and did well. Cameron Nichols and his willingness to get out and race in the 500 was a standout performance from him. Really solid swims from both of them coming out of the first day."
The Eagles take the rest of the night to rest and recover for day two of the Emory Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 9 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
"The biggest thing going into tomorrow is understanding the reason for this meet," Young said. "It's a great opportunity to race at night which is what the team will see at mid-season and at conference. It's a good way to learn how to recover and get ready to move from one race to the next."
Despite the third place finishes on both sides on day one, Ben Young looks forward to getting back into the pool tomorrow.
"If the swimmers weren't happy with how they performed today, then turn the page and move onto the next day," said Young. "That's going to be the conversation with them and this is an opportunity to let that go and carry on to another day of racing."
Carson-Newman gets back in action tomorrow at Nov. 9th at 11:00 a.m. for day two of the Emory Invitational at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatics Center in Atlanta, Ga.
