JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's squad upsets 7th ranked Wingate despite coming up short in the overall score.
The Eagles welcomed the 7th ranked Wingate Bulldogs to Mossy Creek for a conference head-to-head matchup this past weekend. Despite leading after the first day of the contest, Wingate would sneak by with a three-point victory in a score of 316-313.
"It was a solid two days worth of a meet," said head coach Ben Young. "It's been exciting to see where the team has come from and what they were able to accomplish this weekend. The biggest thing for them was making sure that the execution was there. It sucks to lose that close but it's great for the women to pull out a win."
The women's team left no doubt in the pool as they came back in the final event to pull off the upset over the Bulldogs in a final score of 162-152. Down three points going into the final event of the 400-yard freestyle relay, Olivia Muir, Emma Bowling, Megan Corcoran, and Ivanova Martina won first place in a time of 3:29.55 putting the women's team in the lead. Megan Corcoran locked down two first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (56.02) and the 400-yard IM (4:32.33). Emma Bowling earned a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.10.
Freshman swimmer Josephine Harris had a great day in the pool swimming the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:33.42.
"I think we did really well as a team," said Harris. "We encouraged each other even though some of the girls were missing, we were able to bring it all together and try our best."
The men's squad fell short of the first place victory in a score of 164-151 despite a great final performance earning first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Earning four total first place finishes on the day, the team was led by standout performances from Asger Hartvig, winning first in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:07.38. Daniel de Oliveira earned first in the 100-yard butterfly in 48.48. Ryan Berry had a handful of second place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (50.69) and in the 400-yard IM (4:15.28).
Senior Tyler Schehr had a great performance in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a finishing time of 44.14. In the 50-yard freestyle. Schehr locked down a time of 21.42.
"I think everybody performed to the highest level," said Schehr. "I think Ben [Young] was telling us that this was a good Wingate team, but they came in here not suited and we made a mistake for them. We tried our best to make it a mistake for them and we came up just short, but the women winning is huge."
The Eagles take a two-week break before their next meet at Georgia Tech, and Ben Young is looking forward to getting his team prepared for the challenge.
"It's full steam ahead from here," Young said. "We will be here for a few more days coming off of this meet. We'll send them home for a little bit and then come right back and get ready for that Georgia Tech and Auburn meet. We are not that far away from conference, so we're getting excited about that and piecing this last portion of the season together."
Carson-Newman's women's team completes the upset over the 7th ranked Wingate Bulldogs despite coming up three points short in the overall scores. The Eagles look to build off of the success from this meet and prepare to travel to Atlanta, Ga. to take on Georgia Tech and Auburn on Tuesday, Jan. 7th beginning at 12:00pm.
