MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's cross country team claimed second place in the Carson-Newman Challenge at Panther Creek State Park on Saturday morning.
The Lady Eagles finished with 53 points, while Bryan College won the event with 46 points. Milligan College placed third with 64 points.
Freshman Ashley Matthews (Sanford, N.C.) finished second with a time of 20:48 to lead the Lady Eagles, while sophomore Brooke Earhart (Dickson, Tenn.) crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 21:22.
C-N senior Melissa Ford (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Stephanie Savino (Southold, N.Y.) finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Amanda Bowman (Greeneville, Tenn.) finished 18th, and Lauren Henry (Greeneville, Tenn.) claimed 20th place for C-N.
Tennessee Wesleyan's Sarah Birgen won the meet with a time of 19:55.
On the men's side, Bryan College finished first with 28 points, followed by Milligan College, Brevard, Tusculum and Tennessee Wesleyan.
Freshman Tyler Moore (Arab, Ala.) led the Eagles with a seventh-place finish, turning in a time of 28:48. Senior Jonathan Madden (Franklin, Tenn.) finished in 23rd place for C-N, while Justin Browning (Madisonville, Tenn.) and Joey Nielson (Ringgold, Ga.) turned in 31st and 33rd place finishes, respectively.
Tusculum's Simon Holzapfel, the defending South Atlantic Conference champion, won the meet with a time of 26:22.
The C-N cross country teams return to action on Oct. 15 in the Royal Challenge in Charlotte, N.C.
