Turner finalizes 2017 coaching staff

Turner finalizes 2017 coaching staff

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Turner has announced three new coaches and finalized the list of position coaches for the 2017 football season.

New to the staff are Carl White, Josh Turner and Kevin Houchins.  They take the place of Nick Reveiz, who took an assistant coaching position at Albany State, Ryan Roach, who is now an assistant coach at Carter, and Anthony Toribio, who left to pursue his burgeoning photography business full-time.

With the hires comes some shuffling of positions.  Aaron Hutsell will coach linebackers while form C-N safety Dino Waites moves back to coaching the defensive backfield.  White will coach receivers while Turner and Houchens will assist with the offensive line and linebackers, respectively.

White was a four-year member of the Carson-Newman football team, wrapping up his playing career in 2004.  He also ran track for the Eagles.  The former Eagle defensive back tallied 26 tackles while donning 18 for the Orange and Blue.

"I recruited Carl out of high school," Turner said. "He's been a great example of a high school coach through the year.  He came last year and volunteered to coach in the spring.  Everyone was very impressed with him through that.  When it came time to fill that position, it was only natural that he was the choice. How he relates to our kids is very impressive."

White has spent the last six seasons coaching defensive backs at the high school level. He coached at Morristown West from 2013-16 and Cocke County from 2011-13.  West was 20-6 over the last two seasons with White as an assistant.  The Trojans earned a region title and a pair of appearances in the state quarterfinals.

Turner joins his father on the coaching staff, and, much like White, was a member of three consecutive SAC title teams from 2002-04.

Turner will help coach the position which he played and coached at the high school level.  Josh spent 2014 as an assistant offensive line coach at Knoxville Central High School.  Prior to that, he aided Seymour's offensive line from 2009-13.

"Josh has worked our camps for many years in a row," Turner said. "I thought it was the right time to bring him in after many years in the high school ranks.  He understands the system as a center.  It'll be natural to have him working with a fellow former C-N center in Kevin Day. I've always wanted to work with my son, and I'm fortunate that he decided that he wanted to do that as well."

He and his wife Kristi have one daughter, Isbell, aka Izzy, and live in Seymour, Tenn.

Houchins rounds out the Eagles' coaching staff additions.  He played for current defensive coordinator Larry Slade at Lousville before graduating in three-and-a-half years and spending one year at Ohio University where he graduated with a master's degree in Sports Recreation and Sports Sciences.

"Larry was very impressed with his work ethic at Louisville," Turner said. "He knew back then that he wanted to be a coach.  When the GA position came open, Kevin was in it from the get go.  His will and desire to be a football coach is very impressive and we look forward to what he adds to our coaching staff."

Houchins played in 16 career games for the Cardinals, making eight tackles.  He was a three-start recruit out of high school.

"The thing I love about our entire coaching staff," Turner said. "Is that they are all so dang excited to be here at Carson-Newman.  They understand what it means to be here, to play for Carson-Newman, to graduate from Carson-Newman and then go out and make a positive impact in this world for Christ.  I'm thrilled to get to line up with them on this coaching staff."
