Lady Eagles split at Lander

GREENWOOD – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles split a softball doubleheader split Wednesday afternoon at Doug Spears Field. Carson-Newman won the first game, 7-2, and Lander took the second, 11-3.

Lander moves to 6-2 overall, while Carson-Newman is 7-3.

In the first game, the Eagles broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the seventh inning to claim the win. Shealy earned the victory on the mound with two strikeouts, five walks and one earned run on seven hits in the complete seven innings.

Lander's Kelsey Davis (0-1) took the loss with four walks and one earned run on 14 hits in seven innings pitched.

In the seventh, Bethany Davis led things off with a three-run homer, while Lance added an RBI single and Cassie Elliott scored on a fielding error.

Lander took advantage of two Carson-Newman errors in the first inning and grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Donson run.

C-N came right back in the top of the second and tied the game when Kim Whaley took advantage of two Lander errors. Then, with bases loaded and two outs, Morgan's RBI single plated Sara Kelley for a 2-1 lead.

Lander tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when Melanie Davis scored on a fielder's choice.

For Lander, Melanie Davis went 2-for-3.

For Carson-Newman, Bethany Davis went 2-for-4 with one homer, while Shelby Robertson was 3-for-5, Morgan was 2-for-5, and Cassidy Skeen 2-for-3.

In game two, with bases loaded and no outs in that third inning of the second game, the Bearcats went to work. Taylor Donson and Casey Corbitt scored on bases-loaded walks, Donson had a three-RBI triple, Jaime Presnell had an RBI double, and Melanie Davis, Brittany Sheriff and Corbitt had RBI singles.

Lander's Hayley Leissner (5-0) earned the win with two strikeouts, one walk and two earned runs on three hits in five innings.

The Eagles' Mary Shealy (7-3) took the loss with three walks and seven earned runs on eight hits in two innings pitched.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chasity Davis' RBI single plated Sheriff.

Carson-Newman's went up 3-1 in the second. Caitlyn Lance tied the game at 1-1 on a solo home run over the left centerfield fence, Jessica Morgan stroked an RBI single and a Lander throwing error sent Bethany Davis across the plate.

For Lander, Donson batted 1-for-2 with one triple, Presnell went 3-for-3 with one double, while Sheriff went 2-for-3 and Melanie Davis 2-for-2.

For Carson-Newman, Lance hit 2-for-3 with one homer and Bri Shoemake went 1-for-3 with one double.
