Softball listed as team under consideration in first NCAA region ranking

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Carson-Newman's softball program has been listed as a team under consideration for the NCAA softball southeast regional in the first batch of region rankings out Wednesday.

The first of the three sets of rankings isn't actually a ranking, but an alphabetical list of 10 schools under consideration for the tournament. The final two rounds of the rankings actually place schools 1-10.

The conference tournament champions from the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas combined with the top five teams from the region rankings go on to make up the Southeast Regional.

While the initial listing doesn't rank the teams, data is still available to give a potential clue as to where teams stand.

Carson-Newman has the fourth-best RPI in the region behind Wingate, North Georgia and Lenoir-Rhyne.  The Eagles and LR play Saturday.

C-N's .544 strength of schedule is the third-highest of schools that made the listing behind Wingate and Catawba.

The Eagles also own wins over a litany of regionally ranked teams.  Carson-Newman has prevailed over Catawba (2-0), Columbus State (1-0), Lincoln Memorial (1-1) and Newberry (1-1) in region.  C-N also owns wins over the South's Mississippi College and the Midwest's Maryville and Ohio Dominican.

The Eagles have losses against UAH and Embry-Riddle from the South Region, UIndy from the Midwest and Wingate in the Southeast.

Carson-Newman's strength of schedule of schedule will likely be further burnished by its remaining games against Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne.

C-N takes on Anderson Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the Electric City.
