Greer keeps streak alive with win at the Allen and Phyllis Morgan Invitational-Battle at Mossy Creek

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Luke Greer (Abington, Northhampton, United Kingdom) picks up his third victory of the season as the men's team comes in second and the women's team finishes in third at the Allen and Phyllis Morgan Invitational-Battle at Mossy Creek on Friday afternoon.

 

"A proud moment really, especially doing it in front of the home crowd," Greer said. "I just wanted to keep the ball rolling heading into conference. I was nervous before the race because of the expectations and the people here."

The Carson-Newman men's cross country team came in second place at the invitational behind nationally ranked Milligan College and ahead of Tennessee Wesleyan University. Greer, ran the five kilometer course in a time of 15:10.0. The senior reset his own personal record in a five kilometer run that he had set earlier this season at the Tusculum Open.

 

"I'm just thrilled," Carson-Newman cross country coach Tyler Stepp replied. "People are going to talk about Luke today, he absolutely put on a show today and did exactly what we wanted him to do today."

 

Kelvin Ronoh had his third consecutive top-ten finish in a meet this season. The freshman runner just missed the podium by finishing in fourth place with a time of 15:49.1. Ronoh reset his personal record in the event topping his 16:05 run at the Tusculum Open.

 

Amos Korir (Eldoret, Kenya) had his first top-ten finish of the season coming in sixth place during the event. The native of Kenya had a time of 15:56.0 in the five kilometer run, improving on his time from earlier in the season.

 

Anthony Jackson (Manchester, Tenn.) posted his first top-15 run of the season with a time of 16:46.9 Coming in right behind Jackson was Cameron McKinley finishing in 17th place with a time of 17:39.8. Jeremiah McCarter (Sevierville, Tenn.) rounded out the Eagles five kilometer run placing 26th overall with a time of 18:59.5.

 

Jonas Simon of Tennessee Wesleyan and Sam Wehner of Milligan rounded out the podium spots on the men's side of the competition.

The Carson-Newman women's team came in third place against nationally ranked Milligan and Tennessee Wesleyan. Sarah-Kate Gartman of Milligan took the top-spot in the women's draw with a time of 18:33.2. Tennessee Wesleyan had two runners Mysteree Bottoroff and Hannah Rhodes round out the podium positions.

 

"Our girls team ran the fastest five girl average in the past five or six years," Stepp said.

 

Priscah Jemeli (Eldoret, Kenya) and Bekah White (Rockford, Tenn.) were the top finishers for the Eagles on Friday evening. Jemeli came in eighth place with a time of 19:55.2 while White finished in tenth place with a time of 20:08.4. This is both Jemeli and White's second top-ten finish of the season the other top-ten finish occurred at the Tusculum Open to begin the year.

 

"It was really exciting," White said following the race. "It was great having friends and family be able to come out and watch us race today."

 

"I was nervous a little bit," Jemeli replied. "I was nervous about people seeing you run around and they need see you working hard."

Freshman Lindsey Williams had her second top-15 finish of the season with a 14th place outing at a time of 20:41.6. Skye McCarter (Sevierville, Tenn.) came in 21st place with a time of 21:57.9 and Jennifer Warren (Piney Flats, Tenn.) had a top-25 finish with a time of 22:46.1. Just missing the top-25 was Ashlyn Page (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Esteher Njeri (Eldoret, Kenya).

 

The Eagles next race will be in two weeks on October 21 at the South Atlantic Conference Champions.
