WILLIAMSBURG, KY. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles built a 2-1 doubles lead and clinched the match with three quick wins in singles to beat the University of Cumberlands, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon in Williamsburg, Ky.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 5-7 overall.
Carson-Newman won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to open the match, to take an early 2-1 lead. Katie Brown and Devon Jennings combined for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Kate Walker and Stefy Stand put together an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to give C-N an edge heading to singles.
C-N expanded its advantage early in singles as Brown and Erin Green each picked up decisive wins. Brown won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Green won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles as C-N built a 4-2 lead.
Walker picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 to clinch the match, 5-2.
The two teams would split a pair of tiebreakers as Tiffany Delias won her tiebreaker at No. 5 singles for C-N's sixth point.
Carson-Newman returns to action on Saturday against Lenoir-Rhyne at 1 p.m.
