Field athletes shine on first day of the SAC Championships

HICKORY, N.C. – The Carson-Newman men and women's track and field teams ventured to Hickory, N.C. Friday afternoon for day one of the South Atlantic Conference Track and Field Championships held on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University at Irwin Belk Track.

The Eagles found high levels of success out in the field Friday as many athletes found themselves receiving medals on the medal stand.

After Friday's events the women's team found themselves in fourth-place overall with 26 points. The men's team finished the day in second-place overall with 47 points.

In men's field events, senior Randall Freeman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) won the men's javelin throw after his 51.19m (167'11") lob, over five feet further than the second-place finisher. Sophomore TJ Davis's 7.18m leap into the sand pit gave him the crown in the men's long jump. Freshman Tanner Stepp followed close behind in second-place with his 6.85m leap. Stepp also finished in third-place in the men's high jump with a leap of 2.09m.

The women also found much success in field events. In the women's long jump, sophomore Tiana Mills finished in second after her 5.61m leap into the pit. Kristin Chapman earned second-place in the women's high jump with a 1.68m final jump (5'6"). Senior Jessica Azor and freshman Samantha Grudger each tied for third-place in the same event.

In day one of the men's running events, freshman Lachlan Dickie (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished in fourth-place in the men's 10,000m Run with a time of 32:15.67. 

From the women's end,in preliminary events, junior Shauntae Miller qualified in fifth-place in the 400m Dash. Freshman Tori Gaul (Salisbury, N.C.) qualified in first-place in the 400m Hurdles prelims (1:04.49), and Gabrielle Fewell in fourth-place (1:06.94). 

"Tomorrow will be a great test as we continue to push in field events and look for success in the finals of other events," coach David Needs said.
