Vaulters show out at Winthrop, rest of squad soars at Shorter

Rome, Ga.— The Carson-Newman track and field team competed in the Shorter Invitational on Saturday, while also sending its pole vaulters to the Winthrop Adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C.

Those who were in competition at Winthrop were Tori Gaul (Salisbury, N.C.) and Marshall Shank (Granite Quarry, N.C.). Gaul placed second-overall with a provisionally qualification mark of 3.70m in the women's pole vault.

Shank just missed out on a provisional qualification mark, but the fifth-place mark of 4.75m shattered a 45-year old Carson-Newman program-record in the event that was set by David Johnson in 1971.

The rest of the Eagle squad who ventured down to Rome, Ga. to compete in the Shorter Invitational saw a good deal of action on the day as a number of C-N athletes competed in multiple events on the day.

Kevin Snead (Richmond, Va.), who provisionally qualified in the men's 100m dash last week at the Power Sox Invitational following a 10.56 second time improved on the time Saturday by claiming another first-place showing in the event of 10.52 seconds.

The sprinter also recorded another first-place showing in the men's 200m dash after concluding the run in 21.51 seconds.

Of the four timed events Snead has taken part in thus far into the 2016 outdoor season, the Richmond, Va. native has won every event.

Priscah Jemeli (Eldorett, Kenya) competed in three distance events on Saturday and placed top-10 in two. Jemeli's 4:56.94 time in the women's 1500m run was good enough for a sixth-place finish, while her 2:24.37 time in the women's 800m run was good enough for ninth-place overall.

Lachlan Dickie (Knoxville, Tenn.) recorded a second-place finish in the men's 5000m run following a time of 15:30.97 and Tanner Stepp (Jefferson City, Tenn.), who has already provisionally qualified in the men's high jump, competed in the men's javelin throw for the first time this season and finished the day in fourth-place with a 43.18 mark.

Christina Stumpf concluded the men's high jump with a 1.90m leap which was good enough for a third-place finish and Samantha Gudger (Bristol, Tenn.) wrapped up the women's high jump in fourth-place following a 1.59mmark.

Tiana Mills (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also recorded a top-10 finish on the day in the women's triple jump after concluding the day with an 11.30m mark for a sixth-place showing.

"A lot of kids ran and competed better today than they did the week before with a number of people breaking milestones and personal-bests," coach David Need said. "Today was a good meet and as a team, we took a positive step forward today. I am pleased with today, but again, this can't be our high-water mark. We have to continue to improve."

Carson-Newman will be at it again on April 7 at the Tennessee Relays.
