Hawks hand Eagles loss in pitching duel

ROME, Ga. – In a game that featured nine total hits between the two clubs, Carson-Newman stranded eight men on base falling 4-1 to Shorter on Tuesday at the Ledbetter Complex, the team's third consecutive loss.

"We pitched it better today," Carson-Newman coach Tom Griffin said. "Harrison Travis gave us a good inning. We extended Hunter Harritan more than we wanted to but he did a good job keeping us in it. It was a close game and we had good energy. We had chances but didn't get that hit. With the wind blowing in, we needed to string together base knocks to generate runs. We just have to try to learn from each day and get better together."

Shorter manufactured the first run of the game with Norman Leon singling to start the inning, stealing second base, moving to third on a fly out and scoring on a sacrifice fly to make it a 1-0 contest.

In the third, Thomas Schroeder IV drew a one-out walk and moved to second base on a balk. After a ground out, he touched home on an error by the catcher to extend the edge to 2-0.

Shorter tacked on two more runs in the fifth to push the margin out to 4-0. Kody Krause walked and stole second base before back-to-back doubles from Schroeder IV and Kobe Jones brought home a pair of runs.

Carson-Newman's best chance of the game came in the seventh loading the bases with one out getting a run on a wild pitch but settling for just the one run as a ground out to third base ended the threat and kept the deficit at three, 4-1.

James Denten (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) recorded two of the Eagles' five hits for the game with Nelson Smith (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) also reaching base twice with a hit and a walk.

On the mound, C-N pitching fanned eight batters and held the Hawks to 0-for-7 with two outs stranding six runners on base.

Shorter recorded four hits in the game drawing five walks with three different players tallying an RBI. Eight different pitchers threw for the club with Jesse Simpson tossing the first 3 2/3 innings on the mound scattering three hits.

The Eagles return home for a three-game series against Emory & Henry starting on Saturday at noon with a doubleheader. All three games of the series can be seen on FloSports with your subscription or by visiting cneagles.com/live for a free audio-only stream on the Eagle Sports Network.
