C-N men’s basketball aims for first 4-0 start since 1998 with home opener

Carson-Newman game notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -  Carson-Newman's men's basketball team can enter territory to which it never has been in the 21st century.  The Eagles (3-0) aim for their first 4-0 start to a season since 1998 with a Wednesday evening affair against Hiwassee (2-6) at 7 in C-N's first game at Holt Fieldhouse this season.

C-N started 1998 with five straight victories over Armstrong Atlantic, Lees-McRae, LMU, August State and USC-Aiken.

Carson-Newman's 3-0 start is its first since 2007.

Eagle head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson said the fast start is a credit to the Eagles preparation.

"They spent a great deal of time in the preseason and regular season trying to refine our scheme.  We've got some quality veteran leaders and then some new guys that have picked up pretty quickly what we've been trying to accomplish.  I give all the credit to the mental and physical efforts of our players so far."

The Eagles have gone on runs of 24-2 and 20-2 to begin games against Columbus State and Knoxville College in their last two times on the court.  Carson-Newman is outscoring opponents by an average of 20 points/game.

The Eagles are led by reigning SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week Antoine Davis (Rustburg, Va.) and his 19.7 points and 7.3 rebounds a game.

Hiwassee comes in off a 78-67 win over Bob Jones.  The Tigers are led by Rico Stanley and Justin Browner, who average 14 and 12.7 points/game, respectively.

"This is a scary opponent.  From what we've gathered they are a much improved team this year.  They've got a good solid core of returning players and their schemes are sound with a tough man-to-man defense and tough motion offense."

Carson-Newman throttled the Tigers last season, 81-53, behind 19 points from Davis and 18 from Ish Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.).

Benson is just thankful the Eagles are back in Holt Fieldhouse after spending the first 10 days of the season on the road.

"To finally get a chance to play at home after an intense preseason and start to the regular season is like the dessert after a good meal. I know the players are pumped to come out here and play a game where they practice daily."

The Eagles and Tigers tip at 7 p.m.  Pregame coverage on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network begins at 6:45 on 106.3 ESPN Radio The Zone (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com.
